At work we recently upgraded to a better scanner (Kodak i2900). I'm fairly new and haven't been using the Scan module a whole lot. However, it seems to me like there's an issue regarding scanning both the front and back pages. We either have to scan both, or just the front. This is a real hassle, as we don't want lots of blank pages filling up the system servers. The ISIS scan-driver seems to be over-ridden and can't perform blank page removal on the scanning process. In addition, the Scan module doesn't adjust images at all it seems (deskew and crop) and this is done within interpret - which leads to an uncontrolled workflow as we never know how the end result will look like until we're in Verify. Now, I have suggested switching to another scanning software, for example Kodak Capture Pro, but I wanted to hear what others have experienced in this regard? Do you use Scan, and if not, what else?

Hi Aleksander

I must admit I am out of my comfort zone when talking about scanners!  I will try and answer some of your questions and hopefully some other forum members can jump in on the discussion. Help please!

We are scanning about 500 invoices per day as well as using Collector and have no problems with our 3 y/o scanner.

We are using Kodak i1420 and have the Scaninfo plugin installed.  Prior to scanning, we sort our invoices into one of four piles:

1.  Single sided
2.  Double-sided
3.  Multi-page single sided
4.  Multi-page double sided

We then choose the relevant job in the ScanInfo pop-up when we start the Scan module.  So we don't have a problem with blank pages because we adjust the ScanInfo settings prior to running the job.

In terms of scaling, there are settings in the eilocal file that deal with how the invoices will be adjusted.  My understanding is that if Autocrop is switched on, it makes BlackBorderRemoval and SoftwareDeskew defunct.  You can read a little more on these settings in the Readsoft Help files.  Search for ini help.

I would persevere with adjusting the eilocal settings for your current scanner and also look at the ScanInfo plugin (is it installed and/or working properly?) before purchasing a new scanner.  It would be a good idea to get your local Readsoft support to look at this issue as it might just be a configuration/plugin problem.

Our eilocal looks like this:
[Interpret]
IdentifyEveryPage=1
AllPagesAreInvoicePages=0  ; can be used with IdentifyEveryPage
AllPagesAreInvoicePagesInterpret=0 ; Must set IdentifyEveryPage to zero if used, used instead of AllPagesAreInvoicePages
DisplayInterpretedStringToolTip=0 ; display tooltip of interpreted string in verify
LargeInvoice=100          ; Page identification is disabled for invoices larger than this value
;SoftwareDeskew=1
;BlackBorderRemoval=1   ; 0=off, 1=removes black borders of every scanned page
AutoCrop=1    ; 0=off, 1=removed black border and crops image and deskew it in one operation
;IdentifyTime=10   ; Number of seconds before giving up identification of invoice
OrientationDetection=3   ; 0=off
     ; 1=landscape/portrait   (0 or 90 degrees)
     ; 2=upside down   (0 or 180 degrees)
     ; 3=landscape/portrait all (0, 90 or 270 degrees)
     ; 4=all    (0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees)
;NoiseRemoval=0    ; 0=off, 1=removes noise from the image
PreprocessAppendices=1    ; 0=off, 1=preprocess appendices also (Deskew, BlackBorder, Orientation, Noise)
AbbyyDespeckle=0   ; 1=on, 0=off, enabled or disables depeckle filter in abbyy

Thank for the reply Cheryl! Well, it seems like you're working your way around it by piling up different jobs to run. If you had a functional software to do the job in the first place, you wouldn't have to pile them up like that. The Scan module lacks the ability to remove blank pages. We have previously sorted two-sided and single-sided invoices and scanned them in two runs. We use barcodes on each invoice, so separation is done that way and not by inserting blank pages on multipage invoices. However, now we get up and copy each backside of a document while opening postmail - which wasn't my idea.. I'm working on switching to Kodak Capture Pro and get more features, like blank page removal  so we don't have to worry about simplex of duplex settings [smile]

Hi Aleksander,

Thanks for this useful information.  The Melbourne Readsoft user group will be really interested to hear more about Kodak Capture Pro as the use of bar codes and separation of invoices was a hot topic at our last user group meeting.  Monash University (user dhamood on the forum) is exploring the use of bar coding to separate invoices.  So would be great to learn what's best practice in this area.

Would love to hear how you get on if you implement the new scanner or hear from others who might be using Kodak Capture Pro.

Best regards

Update:
Kodak Capture Pro is a gamechanger! It really boosts our efficiency. Two-sided scans with option to remove backpages based on a threshold-limit. We can also monitor ALL backside images after a scan that weren't removed, and then select the ones that needs to be deleted.

Also, the software automatically rotates the pages so that text is portrayed horizontal. The scan quality is superior to Readsoft Scan, and the ease of use is fantastic. We can easily re-scan pages, split documents or add new pages to a document. Rotating, scanning to PDF, black-border-removal, customizable output-name, scan to mail, large screen monitoring; the possibilities are just what we were looking for compared to Readsoft Scan.

We use barcode separation, and it works perfectly. We have created two scan-jobs, so we can either scan PO-invoices or GE-invoices. When we open the program, these two options are displayed at once, and a single click will activate the scanning process with the selected job settings. You could add more jobs for further customization.
